Wet & Wiggly Pond Exploration

Explore the wet and wiggly creatures that live in or near the pond. We’ll use nets to get a closer look at the noisy bullfrogs, twitchy tadpoles, and the crazy crayfish. We may even spot a turtle basking in the sun. Program includes story time, arts & crafts, an educational program, and free play.

Nature Quest Passport Workshop

Nature Quest is a treasure hunt! You use clues in the passport to find treasure boxes hidden at nine of our Public Conservation Areas. The clues will lead you through amazing wildlife habitats and across interesting historical and natural features. At the end of each quest there is a waterproof box that contains a special stamp, an ink pad, and a logbook. Use the stamp to mark your passport, then sign or stamp the logbook (see highlights).
At the workshop participants will learn how to find the clues, make their own stamps, and begin their Quest. Participants will receive a free print out of the Schor quest. Just for the workshop, there will also be a special new quest set up for participants who previously completed the Schor quest.

Peek-a-Bug

Nature Quest Passport Workshop – Workshop Full

This workshop is full. You can quest at our public conservation areas all summer long.
Learn about questing, a fun mix of treasure hunting, exploration, art, navigation, and natural history. Participants use rhyming clues to find hidden boxes on CLC public conservation areas. In each box is a rubber stamp to use on your personal passport. After collecting all nine stamps hidden on our sites, turn in the passport for a special reward. At the workshop, participants can purchase their passports, learn how to find the clues, make their own stamps, and begin their quest. Passports are also available as a free download.

Gnome Home & Fairy Dwelling Workshop

A magical morning of stories, collecting materials, and building tiny habitats that will connect kids with nature while inspiring creativity and pride. Using sticks, bark, dry grasses, pebbles, shells, feathers, pinecones and other natural found objects, children will create whimsical structures for our imagined gnome and fairy friends. Children will take a Polaroid photograph of their creations to keep as a memento. Led by Sasha Sicurella, Education Director of Omi International Arts Center.

Spying on Nature

After being read a story, children will learn to use binoculars and magnifying glasses to get a closer look at birds, leaves, insects and other critters. Participants can decorate a “Bug Box” to take with them as we venture out to see what lives under rotten logs and rocks. Upon returning from the short hike around the pond, nets and aquariums will be available to search the water for frogs, polliwogs, and other aquatic life.

Monarch Butterflies

Explore, interact, and discover nature in a beautiful outdoor setting. Participants will observe and expand their knowledge of nature and learn about what lives in their own backyard. Discover this mighty migrating insect and study the lifecycle of the monarch butterfly. Every fall, monarch butterflies of Columbia County make a journey of over 2,000 miles to reach their winter roosting sites in Mexico. An environmental educator will talk about the monarch butterfly lifecycle and participants will have the opportunity to view butterflies in various stages. At the conclusion of the talk we will tag an adult butterfly and release it at the Schor Conservation Area. Tagging monarchs helps researchers gather data to answers questions about monarch butterfly migration and conserve habitat. Participants will decorate their own butterfly wings to wear home and nets will be available to try their hand at capturing butterflies.

Colorful Crowns and Masks

Celebrate autumn’s colors by making crowns and masks from a variety of fallen leaves and seeds. We’ll begin by scouring the ground to collect colorful leaves and berries, pinecones, acorns, and anything else that strikes a creative chord. Back at the pavilion we’ll create striking masks and natural headgear to take home.
